SF에도 조예가 깊은 난바 히로유키(難波弘之)는 닛타 이치로(新田一郎)와 함께 OVA 달로스(ダロス / DALLOS, 1983)의 음악을 만들었다. 그의 82년작 비행선 몰트호.
요즘은 흔히 접할 수 없는 Space Progressive Rock을 들을 수 있다.

새로운 곳으로 떠나는 우주선 몰트호 앞에 별빛이 쏟아진다.
정든 곳과의 이별에 마음이 아프지만
곧 광활한 우주의 바다에 다다라서는
침묵하는 우주의 적막에 길을 잃고 만다.
아직 아무도 가지 않았던 미지의 영역으로 한 발짝 내 딛는
몰트호는 여전히 알 수 없는 대우주를 항해 중...

The Enid의 너무나도 아름다운 이 곡은 오리지널은 The Lovers라는 타이틀로 1976년 The Enid의 데뷰앨범인 In The Region Of The Summer Stars 앨범에 수록되어 있으며 1984년 동명 앨범으로 다시 발매되었을때는 The Loved Ones이라는 타이틀로 바뀌었다. 2010년에 마침내 1976년 버전이 디지털 복각되었다.

Solaris - Martian Chronicles (1984)

Solaris라고 하면 OS로만 알고 있으면 IT종사자~
(혹시 이름이 비슷한 Solaria를 알고계신다면 Asimov 올드팬~)
하지만 Solaris를 음악으로 기억한다면..
헝가리 프로그레시브 락밴드 Solaris는 폴란드(Polish) 작가 Stanisław Lem의 작품 Solaris(1961)에서 그 이름을 가져왔다. 물론 프로그레시브와 SF를 좋아했기 때문이다.

미래판 분서갱유(焚書坑儒)인 화씨451(Fahrenheit 451, 1953)의 작가 Ray Bradbury의 The Martian Chronicles(1950)에 영향을 받은 프로그레시브 음악史에 길이 남을 Solaris의 그 유명한 첫 LP 1984년 "화성연대기" 마르스베리 크루니카크 Marsbéli Krónikák (Martian Chronicles)를 발표하였다.

소설 Solaris를 영화화 한 2002년 George Clooney 주연의 미국에서 만들어진 것도 있지만 작가와 감독의 대립으로도 유명했던 1972년 舊(旧)소비에트연방의 Andrei Tarkovsky 작품 Solaris(Солярис)가 인상적이라 할 수 있다. 2시간45분이라는 긴 러닝타임에다가 차분한 진행으로 자칫 딴 생각하다보면 바로 꿈나라로 순간이동 할 수도 있다.. 쿨~ 머 Andrei의 유작인 The Sacrifice보다가도 꿈나라로 가는 바람에 몇번이나 비디오 돌려봤었던.. ㅠㅠ

보름달이 뜨면 이 앨범이 생각난다.
처연하기도 하면서.. 그렇게 밝지만은 않은
두 눈 만으로도 자세히 볼 수 있는 유일한 천체.
누군가 말한 걸 들은적이 있는데..
달이 없었으면 지구의 생명체도 번성하지 못했을 거라는..

앨범 커버를 보면
문명의 탑을 비추는 달과 그에 상응하는 그림자.
그리고 그것을 응시하는 인간.
그러고 보니 이 커버에 감동먹어
한 번 그렸봤던 적이 있었다.
행여 그린이의 의도와는 다르게 느껴진게 아닌지 모르겠지만..
커버는 Terry Ilott의 작품으로
가사에도 나오지만 앨범 뒷면에 "The watcher and the tower, Waiting hour by hour"라고 적혀있고,
마이크 올드필드는 "I´m the man in the corner, and the tower is my music"라고 말한바 있다.

달을 보며 이 곡을 들었다.
듣다보면 긴장이 풀렸다 조였다 하면서 점점 고조시키다가
곡의 엔딩부분 클라이막스에 (볼레로처럼)
모든 악기들이 쏟아져 나오는 장쾌한 사운드는 멋지다.
이 엔딩에서 먼 우주로 발사되는
거대한 우주선이 출발하는 모습이 떠오른다.

LP Side A의 전체를 할애한 20분 40초로 제법 길다면 긴 곡이어서
어떤 용자께서 끝까지 들으실지 모르겠다.
듣는 사람 입장에서 얘기했지만
20분가량의 대곡을 연주하는 입장에서 보면
비록 몸은 힘들겠지만 끝나고 어떤 감정이 남을까? (휴~)
