짐 헨슨(Jim Henson)과 프랭크 오즈(Frank Oz) 감독의 1982년작 다크 크리스탈 (The Dark Crystal)
전자제어로 인형을 조종하는 최초의 Animatronics 작품이라고 한다.
이 작품에는 지구인없이 모두 외계종족이 등장함에 따라
여러 외계종족 프로토 타입을 제작하였는데
때마침 지나가던 스타워즈 담당자가 '어~저거슨...' 하면서
맛스타 '요다'님을
스타워즈 요다선생 역의 프랭크 오즈님이 참깨거리(Sesame Street)에서 쿠키 몬스터였었고,
(어쩐지 요다선생과 쿠키몬스터의 톤이 비슷했는데~ 특히 '음~~~' 하는 부분)
짐 헨슨님은 커밋 더 개구리~~
기존 기술은 저비용, 고효율이라는 명목으로 새로운 기술에 밀려 잊혀져 간다.
그렇다고 사라진 건 아니다.
LP나 오디오 테입을 지금도 잘 만 듣고 있지만 디지틀 사운드 파일보다는 불편해졌다.
환경이 바뀌어서 그런 것이리라 생각하지만
복고라 불리는 다시 찾는 옛 기술은 단지 향수, 그리움? 때문만은 아니다.
과정에서 아날로그 특유의 재미를 주었고, 거기서 가치를 느끼기 때문이다.
파일 하나 클릭(터치)해서 듣는 스피디한 감동과
바늘 확인하고, 판 딱고, 회전수 바꾸고 조심스레 LP에 올려놓는 바늘에서
흘러나오는 그 간의 노력?과 그 과정의 감동과는
본질적인 차이가 있는 것이 아닐까.
요즘의 화려한 그래픽과 비교하면 다소 유치해 보일 수도 있지만
여러사람들의 협업과 현장의 노력이 바로 드러나는 기술이 인형극이다.
팔 하나, 다리 하나, 입의 움직임, 시선 처리, 목소리 등을
일일이 사람손으로 해야하는 고되고 치열한 삶. 그 과정의 산물이다.
요즘 CG에 밀려 점점 잊혀져가고 있는 인형극의 끝을 부여잡고~
다음 세대에는 저런 멋진 기술이 있었나? 하고 잊혀지지는 않을런지...
지금 우리가 쓰고 있는 기술도 담 세대에는 잊혀지겠지...
